You don’t have to be a writer to write a book

One of the first questions that I get from experts – consultants, coaches, accountants, attorneys, financial planners, or whoever – who I talk  to about writing a book to promote their business is “How can I write a book? I’m not a good enough writer!”

There’s an understandable but erroneous assumption that you have to be a good writer in order to write a book.

Let me tell you now, you don’t.

Look on your bookshelf right now and you’ll probably spot a bunch of books written by famous figures in the world of business, personal development, finance, and many other fields.

Now, I don’t know for sure (after all, I don’t know exactly what books you’ve got on your shelf!), but I’d be willing to bet that at least 90% of those books weren’t written by the public figure whose name is on the spine. 

The ideas will be theirs. It may sound like the words that person would use. But they are not the ones who wrote it. Why not? After all, aren’t they this ‘big expert’ at what they do? Isn’t that the point of writing a book?

Well, yes. Kind of. They are the expert in their topic. They’re good at what they do. Among the best.

They’re also very busy doing what they do. Too busy to write about it.

Plus, being good at doing something doesn’t mean that you’ll be great at writing about it.

So, they get help. They get help from writers who can take their ideas, get them out of their head, and put them down on paper.

Sometimes, it’s easy to spot when a professional has had help (you’ll see the expert’s name in BIG print, and then underneath “and so and so” – that’s a big clue). Sometimes, it’s hidden away, with a credit for “edited by…”. And sometimes, the real writer takes no credit at all. It’s their little secret.

A lot of the professionals I meet tell me that they’ve been thinking about writing a book for years, but they either don’t have the time or they aren’t good enough at writing. That’s truly sad, when you think about it. They have great ideas and stories and experience to share – things that could change a reader’s life – and they will never see the light of day.

If that’s you, don’t let another few years go by without doing anything. Take a leaf out of those published experts’ books, and get some help!
